Privacy Policy
Last Updated: August 25, 2026 | Effective Date: August 25, 2026
The short version
The Book Collector runs on your device. Your books, notes, reading log, cover photos, and shelves live on your iPhone and iPad, and sync between your own devices through Apple's iCloud (specifically, your private CloudKit database). We do not run any server that receives your data. We cannot see any of it.
We have no analytics, no advertising, no third-party trackers, and no user accounts. The only outbound requests the app makes are the ISBN lookups it needs to fill in book metadata (title, author, cover art) when you scan or add a book, and those go to public catalog services under their own terms.
The long version below spells this out in detail and covers the disclosures required for the App Store and applicable privacy laws.
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy describes how The Book Collector ("we," "us," "our," or the "App"), made by DAK Enterprises LLC, handles information when you use the App on iOS or iPadOS. By downloading, installing, or using The Book Collector, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to this Privacy Policy.
IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY, DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THE APP.
2. What lives on your device
The App stores the following information locally on your device, in the App's private container (managed by SwiftData). If you enable iCloud sync, the same records are also stored in your own private CloudKit database on Apple's servers, encrypted and accessible only to you.
2.1 Your library data
- Book records you add (title, author, ISBN, format, ownership state, notes, cover images)
- Reading log entries (which book, session length, optional notes, date)
- Custom shelves and shelf membership
- Multiple libraries you create (Personal, Spouse's, Kids, Work, or Custom names you pick)
- Sharing preferences for each library you create
- Cover photos or custom cover images you capture or upload
- Any notes, tags, or personalization you add
2.2 App preferences
- General app settings (theme, appearance, sort order, default library)
- State the App needs to render its own screens
2.3 System-managed data (not accessed by us)
iOS itself may maintain records associated with any app — background refresh state, notification permission status, standard system logs. These records are managed by iOS and are not accessed by DAK Enterprises LLC.
3. What we do NOT collect
To be explicit about the categories of data The Book Collector does not touch:
- Name, email, or phone number: The App does not have accounts, sign-in, or user profiles.
- Location: The App does not request or use location services. No GPS, no IP-based geolocation, no region monitoring.
- Camera and photo library: The App requests camera access solely for barcode scanning and, if you choose to capture a cover, for saving that cover image into your own library on your own device. Nothing is uploaded to us. It requests photo-library access only when you choose to import a shelf photo or a cover image, and only reads the specific image you pick.
- Contacts, calendar, reminders, health, motion data, microphone: The App does not request access to any of these.
- Advertising identifiers: No IDFA, no Ad Attribution, no advertising SDK of any kind.
- Analytics or behavioral tracking: No Firebase, no Mixpanel, no Amplitude, no Segment, no Sentry, no Google Analytics, no proprietary tracking. The App does not record what buttons you tap, what screens you view, or how long you use it.
- Crash reporting: The App does not include any third-party crash reporter. Apple may collect crash data through the operating system if you have opted in via iOS Settings; that data is handled entirely by Apple under Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Payment information: Any purchases or subscriptions are processed by the Apple App Store. DAK Enterprises LLC does not receive, process, or store your payment card information.
4. iCloud sync — CloudKit private database
The App uses Apple's CloudKit private database to sync your library across the Apple devices signed in to your Apple ID. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple, and is stored inside your personal iCloud account.
- DAK Enterprises LLC does not have access to your CloudKit private database.
- We cannot read, export, or restore your book data.
- Apple's iCloud terms and Apple's Privacy Policy govern how your data is stored on Apple's servers. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
- You can turn iCloud sync on or off for The Book Collector at any time in Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → iCloud Drive → Apps Using iCloud, or by managing storage under Apple ID settings.
- To remove your CloudKit data, go to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → The Book Collector → Delete Data.
5. Book metadata lookups
When you scan a barcode, type an ISBN, or ask the App to identify a book, the App may send a lookup request to one or more public book-catalog providers to fetch title, author, publisher, and cover art. The providers we use today include:
- Open Library (openlibrary.org)
- Google Books (Google Books API)
- Cover-image content delivery networks operated by the above providers or by Amazon (for cover art only)
These requests contain the ISBN or search term you provided and standard HTTP metadata (such as your IP address). Each provider handles those requests under its own privacy policy. We do not store, log, or aggregate the requests on our own systems. We do not send your name, your library, or your reading log along with a metadata lookup.
6. What we do NOT do
6.1 No sale of personal information
WE DO NOT SELL, RENT, TRADE, OR OTHERWISE DISCLOSE ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION TO THIRD PARTIES FOR THEIR MARKETING OR ADVERTISING PURPOSES.
6.2 No advertising
The App contains no advertising and integrates with no advertising network. We have no plans to add advertising in the future.
6.3 No analytics — today
The App does not collect analytics of any kind as of the effective date of this Policy. If we ever decide to add opt-in analytics, we will update this Policy and describe exactly what would be collected before enabling anything.
7. Apple
Because The Book Collector is distributed through the Apple App Store, Apple may collect certain information related to your download, installation, purchases, and use of the App under Apple's own privacy practices. That information flows between you and Apple. DAK Enterprises LLC receives only limited, aggregated reporting (such as total downloads or subscription counts) that Apple provides through App Store Connect. See Apple's Privacy Policy for more information.
8. Data storage and security
8.1 Where your data lives
Your library, reading log, notes, and cover images are stored on your device inside the App's private container, and (if you enable iCloud sync) in your personal CloudKit private database on Apple's servers. Both are protected by iOS's standard app sandbox and file protection mechanisms, and by Apple's iCloud encryption.
8.2 Security measures
Because the App does not transmit your library data to any server we control, the surface for a compromise of your data is limited to (a) your device's own security, (b) your Apple ID and iCloud account security, and (c) the security of the public metadata providers we contact for ISBN lookups (which do not receive any of your library data — only the ISBN you are looking up).
We rely on Apple's platform security — device passcode/biometric protection, iOS sandboxing, hardware-backed encryption, and CloudKit's encryption — to safeguard the data at rest on your device and in your iCloud account.
8.3 No guarantee
NO METHOD OF DIGITAL STORAGE IS 100% SECURE. IF YOUR DEVICE IS LOST, STOLEN, OR JAILBROKEN, OR IF YOUR APPLE ID IS COMPROMISED, THE DATA ASSOCIATED WITH THE BOOK COLLECTOR MAY BECOME ACCESSIBLE TO OTHERS. WE CANNOT GUARANTEE ABSOLUTE SECURITY OF DATA STORED ON YOUR DEVICE OR IN YOUR ICLOUD ACCOUNT.
9. Data retention
Because we do not hold your library data, there is nothing on our side to retain. Data you enter in the App is retained on your device (and in your iCloud CloudKit database, if sync is enabled) until you delete individual items, delete the App, reset your device, or clear the App's CloudKit data through iOS settings.
Deleting the App removes its local container from that device. Deleting the App does not automatically remove data from your iCloud CloudKit private database — to remove that, use Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → The Book Collector → Delete Data.
10. Third-party services
The App relies on Apple-provided platform services (including SwiftData, CloudKit, WidgetKit if applicable, Vision for on-device OCR, AVFoundation for barcode scanning, and StoreKit for purchases). It also contacts the public book-metadata providers listed in Section 5.
The App does not integrate with or send data to any third-party analytics, advertising, crash reporting, or backend service beyond those listed above.
The App is distributed exclusively through the Apple App Store. Your download, installation, and any purchases are subject to Apple's Privacy Policy and Apple's App Store Terms.
11. Your rights and choices
11.1 Access
You can access every piece of library data The Book Collector stores about you by simply opening the App on your device. That is all of it.
11.2 Correction
You can edit or correct any book, shelf, library, reading log entry, or note directly within the App.
11.3 Export
You can export your entire library or your reading log as CSV at any time from the App's Settings. Your data is portable to any spreadsheet program or competing app.
11.4 Deletion
You can delete individual books, shelves, libraries, and log entries within the App. To delete all local data, uninstall the App from your device. To delete iCloud-synced data, use Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → The Book Collector → Delete Data.
11.5 Sync preferences
You may enable or disable iCloud sync for The Book Collector at any time through your device's iCloud settings.
12. Children's privacy
The Book Collector is intended for users aged 13 and older, consistent with the minimum age for creating an Apple ID in most jurisdictions. Users under the age of 13 should use the App only with a parent or guardian's consent, through Apple's Family Sharing or a Child Apple ID managed by a parent.
Parents may create a library for a child (for example, a "Kids Books" library) within their own household. Because everything the App stores stays on the parent's device and iCloud account, no separate collection of a child's information occurs.
We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided information to us that requires attention, please contact us at [email protected].
13. International data
Because the App stores your library data on your device and in your own iCloud account rather than on a central server we control, international transfers of your library data by us do not occur. Apple stores App Store account information, iCloud data, and any crash logs on your behalf on infrastructure Apple operates worldwide, subject to Apple's Privacy Policy. The public metadata providers listed in Section 5 may operate infrastructure outside your country and receive your ISBN lookup requests under their own terms.
14. California privacy rights (CCPA / CPRA)
California residents have the right to request information about the personal information a business has collected about them, to request deletion, to correct inaccuracies, to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, and to not be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Because DAK Enterprises LLC does not collect, receive, sell, or share your personal information through The Book Collector, most of these rights have no operative effect: there is no data on our side to disclose, delete, or opt you out of. You can exercise your right to delete by uninstalling the App and clearing its CloudKit data as described in Section 11.4. For any other request, contact [email protected].
15. European privacy rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we note that The Book Collector does not process personal data of EEA/UK residents in a way that establishes DAK Enterprises LLC as a data controller of your library data, because that data never leaves your device and your own iCloud account.
If you wish to exercise any GDPR or UK GDPR right — access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, portability, objection, or the right to withdraw consent — you may:
- Access and rectify data directly within the App
- Export your data via the App's built-in CSV export (portability)
- Erase all local data by uninstalling the App, and iCloud data via Apple ID settings
- Contact us at [email protected] for any additional request
16. Subscriptions and payments
Any subscription or one-time purchase offered through The Book Collector — Monthly ($3.49), Yearly ($24.99), Lifetime ($99), or any other price we may set — is processed by the Apple App Store using your Apple ID. DAK Enterprises LLC does not receive your payment card information at any time.
Auto-renewing subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel through Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions. Family Sharing is disabled for The Book Collector's in-app purchases.
17. Disclaimer of warranties
THE APP IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
USE OF THE APP IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK.
THE BOOK COLLECTOR IS A PERSONAL LIBRARY MANAGEMENT TOOL. IT IS NOT INTENDED FOR PROFESSIONAL LIBRARY CATALOGING, INSURANCE APPRAISAL, LEGAL VALUATION, OR ANY OTHER MISSION-CRITICAL USE.
We do not warrant that:
- The App will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free
- Book metadata returned by public providers will always be accurate, complete, or current
- Cover images will always be available for every ISBN
- Library value estimates will match the actual resale, replacement, or insurance value of your books
- iCloud sync will always be timely or successful
- Data stored on your device or in your iCloud account will always be preserved or recoverable
- The App will remain compatible with all future iOS versions
18. Limitation of liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, DAK ENTERPRISES LLC SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Loss of data, library records, notes, or reading log entries
- Loss of profits, revenue, business, goodwill, or opportunities
- Duplicate purchases of books resulting from inaccurate or missing metadata, missed duplicates, or sync delays
- Discrepancies between library value estimates and actual market or insurance value
- Personal injury, emotional distress, or property damage
- Unauthorized access to or alteration of your data
- Any damages resulting from your use of, or inability to use, the App
- Any damages arising from third-party services (including Apple's iCloud, public metadata providers, or Apple platform behavior)
OUR TOTAL AGGREGATE LIABILITY TO YOU FOR ALL CLAIMS ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO THE APP OR THIS PRIVACY POLICY SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF: FIFTY UNITED STATES DOLLARS ($50.00 USD), OR THE TOTAL AMOUNT YOU PAID DAK ENTERPRISES LLC FOR THE APP IN THE TWELVE (12) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE CLAIM.
19. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless DAK Enterprises LLC, its owners, officers, directors, employees, agents, licensors, and affiliates from and against any claims, demands, actions, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from or related to:
- Your use or misuse of the App

- Your violation of this Privacy Policy or any applicable law
- Your infringement of any third-party right (including copyright in any cover image you upload)
- Any decision, action, or omission you take in reliance on the App
20. Dispute resolution and arbitration
20.1 Informal resolution
Before initiating formal dispute resolution, you agree to contact us at [email protected] and attempt informal resolution in good faith for at least thirty (30) days.
20.2 Binding arbitration
Any dispute arising from or relating to this Privacy Policy or the App that is not resolved informally shall be resolved by binding arbitration under the Consumer Arbitration Rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) in Naples, Florida (or via remote hearing at the arbitrator's discretion). The arbitrator's decision shall be final and binding.
20.3 Class action waiver
YOU AGREE TO RESOLVE DISPUTES ONLY IN YOUR INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY AND NOT AS A PLAINTIFF OR CLASS MEMBER IN ANY CLASS, CONSOLIDATED, MASS, OR REPRESENTATIVE ACTION OR PROCEEDING.
20.4 Small claims exception
Either party may bring an individual action in small claims court if the claim qualifies.
20.5 Opt-out right
You may opt out of the arbitration provisions in this Section 20 by sending written notice to [email protected] within thirty (30) days of first accepting this Privacy Policy.
21. Governing law
This Privacy Policy shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Florida, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. For any matter not subject to arbitration, you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of state and federal courts located in Collier County, Florida.
22. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App, in applicable law, or in our practices. Changes become effective when the updated Policy is posted at https://dakenterprises.dev/book-collector/privacy.html. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last Updated" and "Effective Date" fields at the top of this document, and we will provide at least thirty (30) days' advance notice of material changes via an in-app banner. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
